Abstract: 【Objective】 To analyze the effect of antifungal therapy combined with ventriculoperitoneal (V-P) shunts placement for cryptococcal neoformans meningitis. 【Methods】 Twenty patients confirmed cryptococcus neoformans meningitis accompanying uncontrollable extremely high intracranial pressure
who received V-P shunts operation along with antifungal therapy
were reviewed. Information of the intracranial pressure

main clinical manifestations
before and after the V-P shunt placement
were collected and compared. The occurrences of postoperative complications were also reviewed. 【Results】 All 20 cases experienced a significant decrease of the intracranial pressure after receiving the V-P shunts placement
there is a significant difference in intracranial pressure before and after V-P shunts (P < 0.001). The count of Cryptococcus neoformans in CSF were analogously reduced after operation
there is a significant difference in the count of Cryptococcus neoformans before and after V-P shunts (P < 0.001). Main manifestations such as headaches
visual disorders and dysaudia
hydrocephalus were improved remarkably after operation. The complications accompanied with V-P operation are seldom and can be control. No signs of shunts occlusion
over flow or further Cryptococcus dissemination were found. 【Conclusion】 Antifungal therapy combined with V-P shunts placement can effectually reduce the intracranial pressure and the count of Cryptococcus in CSF
induce remission of the intracranial hypertension
while its side effect is rare and be controllable. Antifungal therapy combined with V-P shunts improves the prognosis of the Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis.
